The Commonwealth of Virginia is celebrating its first Specialized Education School Week from October 5–11, 2025, recognizing specialized schools and their importance in supporting students with significant academic, behavioral, and therapeutic needs. The Virginia General Assembly established the annual observance through Senate Joint Resolution 261 (SJ261), designating the first week of October each year.
SJ261 was sponsored by Sen. Stella Pekarsky (D – Northern Virginia) and co-sponsored by Sen. Ghazala Hashmi (D – Greater Richmond) and passed during the 2025 Regular Session.
“At Rivermont Schools, we’re proud to be part of Virginia’s special education continuum, partnering with schools across the Commonwealth to provide individualized instruction, positive behavioral supports, and clinical services that help students make measurable progress and transition back to their public school successfully,” said Dr. Beth Ackerman, Senior Vice President of Rivermont Schools.
Of the 4,500 students that attend Specialized Schools, Rivermont serves nearly 1,000 of those students and families. “We appreciate Virginia’s recognition of the vital role Specialized Education Schools play in our communities and remain committed to helping each student build the skills and confidence needed for long-term success,” said Dr. Ackerman.
